Bring hidden smoke-related conditions into view.
StayControl cross-checks complementary particle and chemical signatures associated with cigarette smoke, vaping-related conditions, cannabis smoke and other supported smoke-related conditions. When those signals form a pattern consistent with an incident, StayControl can surface the condition and retain it for review.
The room can change before your team knows.
In a hotel room or rental, cigarette smoke, vaping-related conditions or cannabis smoke can arise while no one from the team is present. Odor, complaints, room changes and the need for extra inspection or cleaning may only become apparent later. Continuous monitoring gives the team an earlier signal that a room may need attention.
- 01
While the room is occupied
The event can happen while the team is absent. Monitoring can surface a potential issue before another guest or team member has to report it.
- 02
At turnover
Odor may only become obvious later. Earlier notice helps prioritize room inspection, extra cleaning and any additional handling before the next arrival.
- 03
After the event
A complaint or room change may surface after the event. Incident history gives the team a shared reference instead of relying only on memory or scattered messages.
Monitoring adds earlier visibility. It does not prevent smoking, prove who caused an incident or guarantee that every event will be detected.
Useful visibility starts in the room.
What reaches the sensor depends on how smoke- and vape-related material moves through the room. Layout, connected spaces, airflow, ventilation, windows, doors, obstructions, likely source areas and device position can all affect monitoring visibility.
- 01
Read the room
Consider the layout, connected spaces, likely sources and physical obstructions rather than applying one generic position everywhere.
- 02
Consider air movement
Ventilation, windows, doors and other air movement may change how smoke-related material travels through the space.
- 03
Choose and verify the position
Plan the device position with mains power and stable Wi-Fi in mind, then verify that readings reach the platform. Ask MasterMind for placement guidance for complex room layouts.
There is no universal placement or detection guarantee for every room, airflow condition or smoking/vaping event.
See what the system observed. Keep the conclusion honest.
A smoke-related incident record gives the team a shared operational reference. It documents the monitored condition and what followed without claiming more than the system can establish.
- The monitored condition and incident classification.
- Incident history, including start, end and relevant timestamps.
- Signal context and the room, property or device reference.
- Available alert and follow-up history.
- Linked reservation context where a supported integration provides it.
- Who smoked or vaped.
- The precise physical source of every condition.
- Whether the source was cigarette smoke, vaping, cannabis or another specific source.
- That a guest breached a policy as a legal fact.
- That a deposit should automatically be withheld.
- That a fire physically occurred.
PDF and CSV exports can support internal review, room-inspection priorities, owner updates, team follow-up, guest communication and OTA discussions. They do not guarantee legal proof.
Privacy boundary. StayControl uses no cameras and does not record room audio or guest conversations.
Alert the team. Add follow-up when needed.
StayControl can alert the team and retain the incident on its own. Add guest or team communication, waits, retries or rechecks only where they help.
- 01StayControl
Alert the team and retain the incident
StayControl can create the incident record and send included email or push alerts to the selected recipients.
- 02Optional StayAssist
Contact the guest or team
StayAssist can contact the guest or team by voice or message, then wait, retry, recheck or escalate as configured.
No response sequence is mandatory. Guest contact and incident resolution are not guaranteed.
Additional fire-risk visibility.
StayControl monitors cigarette smoke, vaping-related conditions, cannabis smoke and other supported smoke-related conditions. These monitored patterns may also provide an additional operational signal when conditions suggest a possible fire-related issue.
Separate life-safety systems.
StayControl's fire-risk visibility is an additional operational signal. It is not life-safety equipment, a certified smoke alarm or fire alarm, or a replacement for legally required systems. It does not guarantee that a fire will be detected.
Required life-safety systems must be selected, installed and maintained separately under the rules that apply to the property.

Smoke monitoring in daily hotel operations.
Hotel Apartamentos Simon Verde, a hotel complex with more than 100 apartments near Seville, deployed 100+ StayControl devices across guest rooms and shared spaces. Cigarette-smoke odor complaints and related room changes were a central operational concern. The rollout was supported by staff training and hotel-specific workflows.
- 100+
- devices deployed across guest rooms and shared spaces
- 38%
- fewer smoke-odor complaints
- 61%
- fewer tobacco-related room changes
These are customer-specific operational results based on customer data following the StayControl rollout. They have not been independently audited and are not sensor-accuracy figures or guaranteed outcomes for other properties.
What to know before you configure smoke and vape monitoring.
Placement, detection limits, response choices and the boundary between operational monitoring and certified alarms.
Is StayControl a certified smoke or fire alarm?
No. StayControl provides operational smoke monitoring and additional fire-risk visibility. It is not a certified fire alarm and does not replace legally required smoke alarms, fire alarm systems or other life-safety measures.
Will smoke and vape monitoring detect every event?
No. Room layout, air movement, device placement, event characteristics, connectivity and configured rules can affect whether a condition becomes visible to the team.
Why does device placement matter?
Smoke- and vape-related material moves through the room. Layout, ventilation, windows, doors, obstructions and device position may affect what reaches the sensor, so the setup should be evaluated for the actual space.
Can StayControl determine what caused the smoke- or vape-related condition?
No. StayControl can surface a smoke- or vape-related pattern, but it does not prove whether the specific source was cigarette smoke, vaping, cannabis or something else.
Does StayControl use cameras or record conversations?
No. StayControl uses no cameras and does not record room audio or guest conversations. It monitors property signals and does not identify the person associated with a smoke-related condition.
Can the record prove who smoked or vaped?
No. The record can preserve the monitored condition, timestamps, signal history and room or device reference, but it does not identify a person, establish legal responsibility or automatically justify a penalty.
What happens if power or Wi-Fi is unavailable?
StayControl needs mains power and Wi-Fi for platform operation. If either is unavailable, live visibility and alerts may be interrupted until service is restored. A configured unplug notification can alert the team if the device is disconnected.
